Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson defeated Evan Turnage in the Democratic primary, a result the article presents as a counterpoint to calls for generational change in the party. Turnage had argued that Thompson had not done enough to address poverty in the district.
The article reports that Thompson, 78, defeated 34-year-old challenger Evan Turnage by a double-digit margin in Mississippi’s Democratic primary. The Associated Press called the race, and Turnage had argued that the district’s poverty showed voters wanted change. The article frames the result as a counterpoint to the idea that Democratic voters will automatically favor younger candidates.
