Rep. Frank Mrvan asked federal regulators to investigate NIPSCO’s prolonged outages after a derecho left hundreds of thousands of customers without power. He said a federal review should complement Indiana’s state-level investigation and assess the utility’s preparation and restoration efforts.
Rep. Frank Mrvan wrote to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Chair Laura Swett asking for a joint federal review with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation. Mrvan said the outages caused significant hardship, including food loss, flooding, and disrupted access to medical equipment and communications. His letter said nearly 375,000 NIPSCO customers lost power after the Aug. 11 derecho, with some residents in Gary, Portage and Lake Station without power for about two weeks.
Mrvan said he supports Gov. Mike Braun’s call for a state investigation but believes a federal review is also warranted. He asked regulators to examine NIPSCO and parent company NiSource’s storm preparedness, grid resilience, maintenance and restoration performance. NIPSCO declined to comment on Mrvan’s request; in an earlier statement, the company called the storm unprecedented and said it would participate in government inquiries.
