Darline Graham was sworn in as a U.S. senator to serve the remaining months of her late brother Lindsey Graham’s term. South Carolina will hold a special primary in August to select a Republican nominee for the general election.
Darline Graham was appointed by Gov. Henry McMaster and sworn in three days after her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, died. She has not previously held public office and will be South Carolina’s first female senator. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he believed she would continue her brother’s service to the state.
McMaster said he asked Darline Graham to serve after speaking with her following her brother’s death, and said President Donald Trump supported the choice. South Carolina’s special-primary filing period begins July 21, with the primary scheduled for Aug. 11 and a possible runoff on Aug. 25; the general election is Nov. 3. Several Republicans, including Reps. Russell Fry, Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, may consider running.
