Maine lawmakers Angus King, Susan Collins and Jared Golden pushed back on the Trump administration’s proposal to build naval destroyers overseas. King’s committee advanced a defense bill without the proposal, while King and Golden backed adding another destroyer for Bath Iron Works.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the administration proposed about $1.8 billion for offshore warship production because U.S. shipyards lack capacity. King told reporters that Korean and Japanese shipyards face backlogs at least as long as those in the United States. A defense bill advanced from his committee did not include the overseas-building proposal, and King said the committee amended the 2027 National Defense Authorization Act to call for another destroyer.
Collins had questioned the proposal at a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing, saying it could create uncertainty for Bath Iron Works. Hegseth described the proposal as an interim step before a planned $65 billion investment in U.S. shipbuilding capacity. Golden sponsored a House Armed Services Committee amendment to add a destroyer for BIW and prevent overseas warship production, saying American military spending should support American jobs.
