Hakeem Jeffries praised Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s potential political future but declined to back a 2028 candidate. The article also describes polling and speculation about whether Ocasio-Cortez might run for president or challenge Chuck Schumer.
Jeffries told USA TODAY that “the sky's the limit” for Ocasio-Cortez, while saying he was not getting involved in the presidential field and was focused on winning control of the House. He called Schumer a “great partner” and said Schumer would decide after the midterm election whether to seek reelection.
The article says Ocasio-Cortez had completed a listening tour of upstate New York and was weighing a presidential run or a challenge to Schumer. It reports polling showing her at 12% in a late-September Harvard-Harris poll of Democrats, compared with 17% for Gavin Newsom, 11% for Pete Buttigieg and 38% for Kamala Harris. Ocasio-Cortez told The New York Times that a run would be “very all or nothing.”
