Mitch McConnell’s spokesperson said the senator was continuing to meet with staff while recovering in rehabilitation, as his weeks-long absence prompted calls for more information about his health.
McConnell’s spokesperson David Popp said the senator was meeting with staff on Senate and Kentucky matters, including defense appropriations and foreign policy, and that he was improving in rehabilitation. McConnell had been absent from Capitol Hill for about six weeks after being hospitalized on June 14.
McConnell said in a July 12 statement that he had been briefly unconscious, had not suffered several serious injuries or conditions, and was recovering from mild pneumonia. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said he had received calls from two agencies suggesting McConnell had died, but did not identify the agencies.
