South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham Nordone to fill her late brother Lindsey Graham’s Senate seat temporarily. Nordone said she would continue his work and support the president; a special primary to choose a candidate for the November ballot is scheduled for August 11.
McMaster announced that he had asked Nordone to finish her brother’s term, and she accepted, saying she would work to support the president and carry forward Lindsey Graham’s efforts. President Donald Trump said he had recommended the appointment, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune voiced support for it. State law allows McMaster to appoint a temporary replacement to the vacant seat.
The article says a special primary will take place August 11 because Graham was up for reelection this year. Nordone has not previously held elected office and has worked with people with disabilities. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman were identified as possible Republican candidates, and Democrat Annie Andrews is expected to face the primary winner in November.
